"I also think it's very salient to today's comic readers and publishers that even the silliest comics of the 1950s outsold the 'hottest' of today's comics."

To quote Ash Lynx, "Word."

I kind of feel misleading when I'm talking about how much better the stupid comics of the 50s and 60s sold than modern comics, I mean, it's a different world, videogames, TV, the internet, etc. It's not the same playing field. On the other hand, comics in the 50s and 60s weren't obsessed with Power Girl's blood-spattered cleavage. There was at least an *attempt* to appeal to a broad audience.

well, and also, price and availability. Whole lotta difference between a 12 cent comic you can buy ANYWHERE, every drugstore, newsstand, supermarket, blah blah Vs. a 3.99 comic where one must seek, find and enter the forbidden cave of geekatude, if your city has one, as there is only something like 2500 comic shops left in the US now.

but I sing that song overly much, I know.

in many ways I also blame that late '80s hard push to the 'graphic novel' and 'this way bookstores will RESPECT us' nonsense, with the $20 and up pricetags. "It'll be JUST LIKE IN FRANCE" some thought, forgetting that those TinTin books were priced as 'cheap disposable' entertainment for the locals, based on the local cost-of-living rates. See also Japan and the $3 collection Vs. the $10 price in the US.

Blah blah blah but at least it's on the topic. :)
