Dec. 6th, 2016 12:47 pmwhat have I been up to? Been writing a new Let's Anime column to get my "one a month" requirement for the year completed. Helped David Simmons move the weekend before last, I rented a cargo van instead of driving the Yaris back and forth, and it went pretty well. Weather has been holding steady but we should see some snow this weekend. This past weekend I put the radio Neil gave us into the car. I had to splice the wire harness, which is kind of a pain, which we did while watching "Santa Claus Conquers The Martians".
We bought a tree! This is the first Xmas tree I have ever bought in my life. It's tiny, but it's a live tree, in a pot with dirt, maybe we can keep it alive for a while, that would be nice.

Also bought a new cushion for the ottoman and a new frying pan and some other general household stuff. Went out walking on Sunday and had a great lunch of big flat Western Chinese noodles at some place in Scarborough. Watched the big four-part Supergirl-Arrow-Flash-Legends crossover and it was so much like reading a late 1980s superhero comic that I thought for a minute I was having to dig these out of longboxes. It's guilty pleasure TV. Unsure as to why you put the Atom in a TV show and NOT have him shrink down to tiny size, but whatever; I won't be watching any more of any of those other shows so if he does ever shrink down I'll never know. We did also see the Dr. Strange movie and it's a pretty good movie, you should catch it in 3D if you can.
Anyway the new radio works great, it needs an antenna for the GPS, but the FM and AM reception is great (our last car radio simply did not get AM) and the CD player works and there's a USB input for playing MP3s from flash drives, etc. I am still whittling down the dashboard frame to make it fit properly, though. It won't look great but it'll look better than the gaping hole that used to be there. We'll be driving down to Atlanta starting on the 22nd and it'll be nice to listen to crazy local and not-so-local AM stations again.

Date: 2016-12-06 08:16 pm (UTC)But part of my problem in enjoying these shows is my 'embedded memory' of characters is stuck firmly in the late '70s to some point in the '80s. Really, I think you can draw a line at 'Crisis of Infinite Earths' for me.
So I don't know all the ins and outs of what has changed with The Flash over the decades. I just know he was dead then he wasn't then stuff. My key memory of Green Arrow is Mike Grell and Neal Adams before him. Hawkman (and Hawkgirl, later Hawkwoman) was a cop from Thanagar. The Martian Manhunter was a cop in his secret identity. Lots of police in the Silver Age, huh?
So maybe there's a reason why The Atom is playing Iron Man. I dunno. So maybe there's a reason why Oliver Queen is now basically Batman with a bow. (I know, he always was in the Silver Age but he was much 'lighter' compared to The Dark Knight.)
I try to just roll with it when I watch the shows but when I see in Supergirl there's a Legion of Super Heroes flight ring sitting in Superman's Fortress of Solitude, DAMN but I want to see the '70s Legion show up and Supergirl start dating Brainiac 5. Why not?
The casting on the shows is generally fun. Supergirl seems to be universally loved, and Flash gets high marks, the troublesome show is Legends of Tomorrow which takes some interesting chances (Jonah Hex? Huh.) but it's time travel that runs around and around and things tend to happen just because and nothing really moves forward until the end of the season. Plus they killed Captain Cold (altho I think he's coming back. Because comics).
I really think they need a new Batman show. Something in the vein of the Neal Adams run of Detective Comics. Never gonna happen.

Date: 2016-12-06 09:33 pm (UTC)If I've ever deliberately read a Flash comic in my life, it didn't stick, so I have no idea what happens to that character. Ditto Green Arrow or Green Lantern or Hawkman.

Date: 2016-12-07 12:28 am (UTC)I think there's been like 15 reboots of the Legion since the '90s. Naturally I vote for the brightly colored sometimes wacky Legion and am 100% against the more recent 'grimdark' monocolored version. What's so wrong with Matter Eater Lad and Bouncing Boy and Duo Damsel and so on? I say nothing at all is wrong with them.
So you sound like you're keeping up with Supergirl. Did I blink, in regards to the continuing 'b' story of 'Alien Immigrants from Space'? I don't recall ANY 'resident aliens' first year except those that oh-so conveniently escaped the Krypton Space Jail that crashed on Earth. I feel like I've missed an entire season or something.
And I want the whole Kirby '4th World' underpinnings brought to the fore. I think they've mentioned Intercrime (Damn, Kirby could sure gin up great names) and Cadmus was a completely different thing, but we could have Mister Miracle and The Newsboy Legion and the real Guardian (sorry, not James Olson) and The Forever People...
And I am now once again clearly insane. :)
