Yes, it's bad Comico Star Blazers comics. I know some of the people involved knew their Star Blazers, yet they managed to kludge it up pretty badly. The first series was published in 1987 and had weird Phil Foglio/Doug Rice art, and a convoluted story that read like bad fanfic, and the second one was from 1989 and had even weirder art and that's what we're making fun of here.

FUN FACT: I have a letter published in one of these comics, pimping the EDC. That's what kind of nerd I was back then.

FWIW, Great Honk! seems to be a Chicago fannish term. Foglio used it a number of times in his various comics.

Like many carryovers from '70s Trek/SF fandom, I'm sure it was funny at the time.

I don't know what the deal with Rice was. He did some really nice standalone illos but his comic stuff always came out a bit, well, amateur. Even Dynamo Joe had ups and downs.

I have no clue what was going on with art on that other SB series.

It would be easy to say "Why didn't the licensor put his foot down and demand better?" but I don't think Claude Hill gave a flying f**k as long as he made some money.

I would say more in a biting sarcastic tone but there's still a LOT of murk about the history of Star Blazers production and just how involved Nishizaki (and his agent of the day) was in the whole thing. We DO know he was involved enough to get Books Nippan to whip out those Star Blazers anime comics. :)

(open secret. I always hoped they were going to do the second series, but the 'we only make things for First Yamato' curse continued :) )

ETA: Annnddd I may be full of crap because Great Honk! may be sourced from...The Music Man?! http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056262/faq (look down to 'ye gods!')
