I have to wonder if the reason for the 1700s ship and crew in 1908 is because that was all they had in their swipe file, instead/as well as general stupidity.

I may be overanalysing, but I wonder how Jim knows so much about the circumstances leading to the loss of the ship with all hands. Had the ghost been complaining about it beforehand?
