Archie, Jughead, and Reggie get drafted to go off to Viet Nam in this week's Stupid Comics!




It's a penetrating look at an issue that seems far off to us today, but back when this was new many Archie readers were staring it right in the face, being inducted right out of high school to potentially go and fight the VC. The draft issue was literally tearing America apart, but kudos to Archie for tackling it anyways, even if they do struggle manfully to stay right in the middle of the issue.

I grew up assuming I was going to go to Vietnam. My plan was to volunteer rather than wait to be drafted in order to have some chance of choice of service. Luckily for me we were out of 'Nam before I reached my majority. I then found out I wasn't qualified anyway due to seriously poor eyesight.

I can't even really imagine what life would have been like had my eyes been 20/20.

Hey, there's something interesting there in the story. Betty and Veronica's opinion is never heard. I mean, if Archie is gonna end up in the 'Hanoi Hilton' (altho likely not, he's not Air Force) that's got to put a crimp on that eternal triangle thing they got going on, huh?

We assume the brainy kid already has his college deferment and has been headhunted by DuPont, right?
