Try setting comments to friends only for a month or so, and maybe LJ will have done something to stop the spam when you toggle the switch back to "anyone"...?

I have anon comments screened so it's not that big of an issue, really. It's more of a problem for LJ, in that every time I have to delete a spam comment, I think "Gee, I'm glad I never gave LJ a dime."
