On a day when the city council is debating future transit funding and when every ding-dong street in the city is being ripped up for construction or closed for who knows what reason (I'm looking at you, DVP), Blog TO has a lovely set of vintage TTC public service announcement placards.

I don't know if I'd characterize shopping women as elephants, but hey, it's lovely.

Ok, the "Don't be this person" message is pretty obvious, but I don't understand the context.

Apparently the concept was that rush-hour transit should be reserved for workers and laborers to get to and from their jobs, and that if you're just taking the Red Rocket out for shopping, wait until non-peak periods so you aren't taking up space (as an elephant would do). There are a few more posters that are a little clearer about it on the blog.to site.

This was during WWII, so it's understood that workers were going to build Bren light machine guns at the Inglis factory (which is where our neighborhood is now) or some other defense-related job.

It's not a very understandable poster 70 years on, but it does look swell.

Oh, it's beautiful art... looks mildly inspired by the old Babar books, to me.
