with the smart patrol

Shain and I went out last night with a gang, a Con Bravo gang (Mike, Mark, Cathy) downtown to see DEVO as part of the NXNE music festival! Big crowd - more crowded than Iggy Pop last year, but the crowd was shorter and not as, I dunno, agressive, for some strange reason. Here's some pix!!

No, wait, that's a crayfish I saw in the Rouge River earlier today. Okay, hold on to your energy dome, here we go!!

DEVO came out in slick new blue suits and blue Energy Domes to bring the gospel of de-evolution to Yonge & Dundas Square. They're looking older (well aren't we all) but they can still deliver the scientific truth.

After a few songs and a long animated bumper they returned wearing the classic yellow protective gear.

That's Good, Whip It, Uncontrollable Urge, Satisfaction, Girl U Want, Secret Agent Man, Smart Patrol (Mr DNA), Jocko Homo, Planet Earth, Mongoloid.

The yellow suits were removed to reveal the skater-gear shorts, including kneepads. Must remember the kneepads!

Mark's voice started to take a powder somewhere halfway through "Gates of Steel" and his face became a stoic mask of de-evolutionary shame. But the Gerald, Bob 1, Bob 2, and Josh took up the "slack" and brought it all home.

The encore was "Freedom Of Choice" and involved Mark throwing bread to the audience. Earlier during "Jocko Homo" he paraded around at the front of the crowd with cheerleader pom-poms, exhorting the audience into a regressive pinhead frenzy. If General Boy could see him now...!

This was my first time seeing DEVO live, and in spite of no Booji Boy, they delivered the goods to the Ontario spuds. Thanks fellas for giving us all a reason to live again. And now, crawdads.

Given how they were always pushing the edge of the concept of multimedia entertainment, I really wonder what they do now. I pray it isn't telling everyone to go to their Facebook page using one's smart phone and leaving comments on their wall.
