ld play

Every time I turn on the TV or the radio the news gets worse; at some point I will retreat into a cocoon and do nothing but read Archie digests for a few weeks. Thursday I was all freaked out because my gmail account got hacked, but Friday AM my troubles suddenly got a lot smaller. I had to go into work on Friday night so that was kind of a welcome distraction. Saturday Donald and David came over and we went to Liberty Noodle and had some dinner; I had seen the place reviewed on a few blogs - even a few negative reviews, which in my opinion are completely unwarranted. I've never had a bad meal there and the sweet potato chips are excellent. Sunday we went out into the hinterlands and hit a few flea markets we hadn't hit in a while. Nothing incredibly outstanding presented itself to us, other than one place giving us the boot at 5pm. This was the place where, a couple of years ago, we found somebody selling a laser disc player and 5 movies for $150. Gee, I said as we went in, I wonder if that LD player is still here?

Yes it is! Same twine wrapping, same handwritten note, same price.

So if you know anybody who needs a LD player and a copy of "In The Name Of The Father" and wants to pay about three times what the whole package is worth, let me know!

We took a roundabout way home, had a mediocre meal at the Applebees in Mississauga, got some supplies at the Krispy Kreme, and then I came home and worked on the newest ZERO FIGHTER page. Afterwards, inspired by our journey, I hauled out the LD player and watched some of the MACROSS movie, which as lovely as it is, is about the survivors of a terrible cataclysm, and as such this week is a little too real, and about two thirds of GALAXY EXPRESS 999, which remains my favorite Matsumoto-inspired work of animation.

WHAT JAPAN DOESN'T NEED: your weepy fanart of "Japan" from Hetalia, your website where you can "light a virtual candle" and "think good thoughts." Cash instead, fellas. Maybe it's harder to wave around to show everybody how deeply you care, but it gets the job done. Fanart don't.

Does Liberty Noodle serve liberty cabbage?

Just noodles and rice bowls, kind of a Asian fusion sort of place. And it's literally right across the street from us, so if it's a Friday and we don't feel like going far for dinner...

Anybody who needs a laserdisc player can drop by the Durham Goodwill store by the Mazda dealer, mine might still be there.

They are being edged out by the DVD/VHS combo players, but I still see them in the thrifts up here. I would probably pay $20 for one that had a remote (I am lacking a remote for my Pioneer).

Shit. I'd offer you the old remote from one of Phil's (he has like three lying around here, all unused for the past five years or so...) but I think the only Pioneer is wrapped in plastic Hefty bags up in the attic somewhere.

Yeah, I'm just evil, but I'm fed up with the twee weeping chibis. Surely ya got $5 to send to the Red Cross. I sent a bit more than $5.

I'm not watching all that footage. Like you said, too much exposure will put you in a fetal position. Nor can I watch Gatchaman right now, since most episodes open with some awful cataclysm and high body count. It's just not entertainment right now.

Somebody forwarded me the link to the Yoko Kanno song, and I wound up crying like an idiot, picturing all lists of the names of the missing.

I threw some money at charity today and put a bunch of links up on Let's Anime as part of the "Anime & Manga Bloggers For Japan" thing. It's not much but at least doing SOMETHING takes the edge off, makes me feel a little less helpless.

I don't know that I'm ever going to be able to watch a cataclysmic destruction type of anime ever again without thinking of this disaster, though.

Damn. More than a dollar for an LD is too much.

A buck a disk is what the Star Wars trilogy on LD cost me; the last version they did before Lucas "fixed" them up real good.

Turned down a lot of other buck-a-disc LDs. Raiders. Should have gotten that one.

We were in that flea market in the basement of the Dixie Mall last week and one guy had a box of LDs he was selling for twenty and thirty and forty dollars. Meanwhile in the BMV in the Annex you can get all the LDs you want for five bucks each, max. It's weird when the Annex is beating Dixie Mall prices.
