Frequently - well, not so frequently these days, but it happens sometimes - people will want to swap DVDs or files or whatevers of anime, and they don't have a list of what they've got, they just ask me what I'm looking for. And at this stage of the game what I'm looking for is some pretty obscure stuff. But also, at this stage of the game there is a vast secretive network of fan-subtitlers working on projects that I may or may not even hear about, swapping files and links on closed-members-only message boards, so the chances of something I'm interested in making its way to being available for me to watch, those chances are getting better and better all the time.

Yeah, I understand that me asking for swaps might go against the mindset of the 21st century that we should only watch anime that is approved, translated, dubbed badly, bought and paid for from a North American licensor. Well, North American licensees aren't bothering to release the shows I want to see, so until they get off their can and start catering to my whims, they can go fly a kite.

(My attitude is the same attitude I've had since 1990, which is that if it's legally available in North America as licensed product, I don't make copies of it or distribute it. It's an attitude that's served me well for 20 years in all strata of fandom.)

So if you have any of these shows, or know of a ztorrentz or a mega-borgupload where it's available, or of somebody who's fan subbing it, let me know. I will cheerfully swap whatever I have that you might want. No, I won't copy Anime Hell discs for you, come to the damn show and enjoy it in the crowd like everybody else. Thanks! (YouTube links are cute and all, but are worthless for my purposes, which is to say, actually enjoying as a television show as God intended them to be enjoyed. Kthnxbye. )

JOUO HEIKA NO PETITE ANGIE aka CHARLOTTE HOLMES (would prefer English dub)

STOP! HIBARI-KUN

the PINK LADY anime and live-action film from the 70s

GO GET THEM 0011

the color TETSUWAN ATOMU film from the 60s

SASURAIGAR in English as "Wonder Six" (got plenty in Japanese, thnx)

Wow, so do you have a copy of that Topo Gigio film?

I think I have a TV opening or a movie trailer somewhere for a Topo Gigio thing. Can't say that Topo Gigio was ever anything that I reacted to, other than to say "Hey, that's Topo Gigio."

Someone in the comments put a link that has a rar file with the sub files for the first 5 eps.

I just can't watch any show on a computer. I'll watch a clip or two of something but whole films or TV episodes? No.

Also, the number of legit anime releases in recent years that I've been interested in has dwindled down to a pathetic handful of titles. There's too much poorly animated crud focus-grouped at increasingly specific hyperotaku demographics and not enough titles that feature that certain "zing" that drew me to anime in the first place, or even the faintest hint of enertainment.

There are far less anime releases that interest me nowadaways, and, to be honest, I like it that way. Years back, I'd watch all sorts of shows that mildly intrigued me, and most of them were just disappointing.

I think I prefer having to pay attention to only four or five new anime each year.

Is 'Wonder Six' actually out there somewhere? I assumed Enoki just had the name, the general localization 'bible' and maybe one episode in English to show at MIP-TV at Cannes.

Toole seems to think it's extant somewhere, Malaysia or the Phillipines or some such place. Of course the claim is made that Daimos got the English dub in the same way, and that's often referenced but no one's actually seen it with their own eyes.

This is what makes our hobby so frustrating. I recall looking up stuff in the old Videolog we had at Suncoast (remember that? I took it upon myself to place the updates in every week, and man, was that thing a mess until I cleaned it up, weeded out the expired...well.) and seeing so many 'rental' tapes I wanted REALLY BAD, such as all the Sandy Frank Starwolf, Mighty Jack, Ape Army and Message from Space TV tapes. It didn't appear that the entire series were done, just compilation movies.

Not at $80 each, sorry. If our jobber had them even. Navarre and Baker & Taylor only got you so far. Took a YEAR to get the Best Films Arcadia of My Youth in.

And I want to go back in time and grab that damn catalog. We threw it out in...ohhh, 2001 I think, after the Best Buy rape...er..takeover. Another historical document lost to the landfill.

I can remember seeing a bunch of highly priced retail VHS that looking back I am very glad I didn't drop $80 on. That was a lot of money in 1985. The Sandy Frank stuff I now have in one way or another, and is all barely watchable; there's a way to edit compilation films so they're interesting, but those aren't it. MIGHTY JACK in particular is like pure boredom, which is amazing considering its pedigree.

Which Anne Frank anime would that be? The 1979 one or Madhouse's 1995 movie?

I'm guessing it's the 1979 version. I've seen the 1995 one, and it's pretty realistic and by-the-book.

That one outta be interesting to get if only to see how well Nippon Animation adapted it then.

Reminded Nippon Animation did a TV film that same year based on Paul Gallico's "The Legend of Manxmouse". I already have this in English anyway, but wouldn't mind seeing it in Japanese to spot any differences as I like doing.

I'm still looking for that Pink Lady anime myself, though a friend sent me the live-action movie as an mp4 some years back.

Noticed elsewhere the Charlotte Holmes anime got dubbed into English under the title "Sherlock & Me", and know of someone who apparently has a tape of that over in the UK I thought he would send me too for having saved some of his clips when YouTube shut him down.

Pink Lady movie? Come on man help a brother out!!

I have a sneaking feeling whenever I make it over to the UK I'll be spending a lot of time digging through the thrift stores looking for out of print PAL VHS of anime that never made it to the States. Oxfam & boot sales here I come!

And I will!

I just found and uploaded the film here...

This was made essentially to be put on a PSP so don't expect hi-res here folks, but it's the best I'll do to share this with Dave and others in the internets!

You'll certainly do a lot, seems like they pretty much had the same deal we had with all those "Kid Vid" titles back in the day. Here's a site devoted to and reviewing such "Bargain Bin Anime" classics!

You're on ADC as well, right Dave? Really good stuff there lately-- ISOs of fan-restored GULLIVER'S TRAVELS BEYOND THE MOON and LITTLE NORSE PRINCE DVDs that are bilingual with subtitles/widescreen, some guy did all of the Locke the Superman cartoons, another dude dumped neatly subtitled images of the VOTOMS OVAs all the way up to Pailsen Files... I really want to buy these things at the store, but until they appear I feel compelled to grab 'em, burn 'em, and put 'em on the shelf.

I'm in the hunt for Wonder Six, as well as the English-dubbed HEIDI (broadcast on Cartoon Network India in 2000 and 2001). Keep an ear to YouTube - I got several episodes of ThunderSub and K-On! (Animax dub, different from the new dub for the US!) from there, and am starting to find clips of an animax-dubbed version of ZZ Gundam. Yes please!!

I was glad to have helped on making the multi-lingual LITTLE NORSE PRINCE possible, though I ended up noticing how feeble my effort was in sharing the audio to these guys (since MGM decided to stick the film up on Hulu themselves), still it was a nice gesture I managed to locate a film print I bought off eBay of it anyway for the pleasure of helping these guys out.

I've heard about the English dub of Heidi, though you'd wish these people over there would care to share this stuff with the rest of us. Those Animax dubs also intrigue me fully, if only because I know these will never see the light of day on American shores.

Again, this is why you need connections!
