So the news out of Seattle is that cartoonist Mark Campos has committed suicide. At first I didn't know the details and then I learned the details via a FB post from cartoonist Jim Woodring, which is a really surreal way to find out how someone you know killed themselves.
I never met Mark in person, but we knew a lot of the same people and connected via LJ and Facebook. I spent an evening PMing him on Facebook during a particularly low time in his life a few years back. I wish I’d been able to be there for him yesterday to talk him down from whatever mental ledge he was on. I know he'd had his ups and downs, he was in a bad relationship when I first got to know him, he went from that to another, slightly better but still tumultuous relationship, and last week I believe that ended, and an art show of his got cancelled as well, and I don't know if the two events were related at all. But that's all I know.
I want to say that if you’re in a bad place and need someone to talk to, the number is 1-800 273 TALK, write it in Sharpie on your hand and call it. The world needs you in it.
