One more day in the year and we're ready to see this one receding in the distance. It's been a wild ride but I wouldn't have missed it for anything. We're still down in GA enjoying the holiday, but we head back north in a few days.
Anyway, word on the LJ street is that now the LJ servers have been moved to Russia, which means that Livejournal and everything on it is now subject to Russian laws regarding calling Putin a bald-headed polonium-poisoning dictator and other crimes against the Motherland. Understandably the large Cyrillic user base of LJ is now freaked out. Don't take my word for it, read up on it here:

LJ has been owned by a Russian company, SUP, for some years, but until recently, the servers were in California, and thus subject to US law. This is no longer be the case.
I have done a traceroute ( http://ping.eu/traceroute/ ) on my own LJ, and it appears to come through a Russian server now.
There are unconfirmed reports that journals with 'objectionable' content, such as pro-Ukraine blogs, are being deleted. There's also what looks like a mass migration of Russian users into Dreamwidth over the last week or so.
There are all kinds of ramifications for this move, most of them bad. For people located outside Russia, I think the greatest risk is simply that SUP has decided that the non-Russian side of LJ hasn't been profitable in ages, and is never going to be profitable, and this is the first step in shutting it down entirely. So if you have a Livejournal with content that you'd like to preserve, now is a real good time to back it up.
I have no idea if LJ will continue to exist or not, and it'll be a shame if it goes down in flames, but it's not the only game in town. If you want to find me on other corners of the blog-o-sphere internets, you can find me at the following:

This isn't the first time. I just want my LJ readers to know that there are other places I appear regularly.
I have slowly been taking the good stuff out of this LJ and posting it at the d-merrill blog, travelogues and movie writing and anything that might be of interest and might get some eyeballs, putting it somewhere where the pennies generated by those eyeballs will benefit myself and not the SUP corporation of Minsk or Omsk or Pinsk or whatever oblast they're in. If LJ vanished tomorrow the loss of my material would not be crippling. Annoying, but not crippling. I think I set up a Dreamwidth blog at some point but if it's still extant that's anybody's guess; LJ is a remnant of an earlier time and if it goes away, I can't work up a lot of enthusiasm about continuing with something that's basically a clone. I'd rather move on to something more vital, less "2002."
