I've never really watched Giant Gorg before. It's one of those '80s anime shows that I just kind of put on the shelf and said "well, OK, that exists". I do recall the anime magazines of the day giving it a pretty big push, my file of posters, postcards, love notes and other brickabrak is fairly substatial. I just never warmed to it.
I should have. It's that rare thing, an honest, unapologietic Science Fiction action-adventure. There's no real shocks or surprises in the show, I mean good lord they even have a giant dog companion for comic relief! What is this, the '60s? (see also Flying Phantom Ship and everything Hanna-Barbara made)
No, it's the '80s and Sunrise, for a brief and shining moment, tried to do interesting and unusual and classical anime other than no-apology-needed toy based product. Like Crusher Joe, Gorg is an oddball that didn't really fit the times.
Yet, it COULDN'T have been made at any other time. It was just the right time, with enough success under their belt, for Sunrise to take some money and cut loose, FOOTLOOSE! I mean, play around with something that was not really commercial. (And I should clarify, Crusher Joe was VERY commercial in its own way, but it seems to me it just didn't 'hit' the Japanese publlc's fancy the way Yamato and Gundam had.)
So, blah blah blah. Why should YOU buy Giant Gorg?
First up, it's on sale at Amazon. I have no idea how long it'll stay cheap so MOVE QUICK!

$29.99 USD is a steal for this. It's EXACTLY the sweet spot I think it should be at. The MSRP is listed as $49.95 USD and I feel in today's market that's too damn high. $30 for 26 episodes is the right price. It's worth taking a chance at that price.
And the reason you should take that chance, the animation is BEAUTIFUL. I mean full and rich and lots of movement and oh god pure unadultarated Yas (Yoshikazu Yasuhiko). (aside, if Gundam The Origin looked like THIS I would be much more excited by it). There is so much going on, characters ACT, so much sock and stretch and bounce and everything. I didn't have enough appreciation for such things back in the day but now, now, I can't tear myself away.
Product info, Japanese with English subs only. If you're one of those people who just can't stand that, it's your loss. Visually, I'm blown away. Such clarity, such colors. Sharp and clean with no noticible artifacting.
Come on, get your Gorg on. Buy something that isn't mindeless cookie-cutter MOE crap for once.
