the sun

The sun is out and the weather has warmed up slightly and we've been recovering from the winter slightly. We had a cactus for years and years; I ignored it for months, would water it sporadically, we moved it from our old place to our new place and it seemed to thrive, and then I left it outside in a cold snap and that killed it. Since then I've attempted to replace it twice and both cactuses have died. I guess we need to quit buying plants at the Home Depot. We did buy a bunch of stuff at the Beguiling and then we got stuck in traffic on our way to the new Stockyards Target, because they closed the Gardiner for maintenance. They mentioned it on the radio and said how it might be a great time for people to use public transit, and the very next item said "and the GO trains (intercity public transit rail) are on limited service today due to..." So if you want us to take the trains, guys, make sure they're running, OK? I know every time Shain's had to use the TTC to get anywhere specific there will be a line shut down or re-routed or problematic and she winds up riding her bike when the weather's nice anyway. Which reminds me, I should give my bike a spring checkup and probably buy a light for it.

Zero Fighter last Sunday was a bit larger than normal because I just wanted to do it. That's the benefits of webcomics I guess, you can do whatever you want. When I look at the second panel I think it's kinda dull, but the original version was even flatter and duller. I find the larger I work, the better the inks are, but the harder it is to keep the line fresh and spontaneous. It's a challenge. That's why I keep doing it, I guess.

Georgie Girls has tips on being a classy fan from Gentleman Gaijin. Any similarity to persons living or dead is purely coincidental, I assure you. Meanwhile mysteries continue to mystify in Behind The Blue Door.

Stupid Comics features a comic we've had for a while and have seen here and there in the dollar bins, a comic about a bodybuilder-muscle-girl who lives like Tarzan in the jungle battling ferocious beasts and evil intruders. It's a very specific fetish that comes out of the 1940s and never really went away, I guess; Eisner-Iger's 1937 comic Sheena has lasted decades, with a movie in the 80s and a TV show in the 00s, Marvel keeps trying to insert Shanna and Ka-Zar into their books, somebody must like the whole Tarzan motif. When it's combined with a muscle-woman fetish the results are confusing, but somebody's having fun with it. The artwork is actually pretty good, the artist knows anatomy, real muscle group anatomy, and the inking has a speed and a dash to it that's kind of charming.

Still working on panels for Anime North. I'm doing Anime Hell, Shain and I are doing Stupid Comics, I'm doing my panel on Knack, and Neil and I are covering Candy Candy.

I'm also going to be on the Golden Ani-Versary panel with Geoff Tebbetts where we talk about fifty years of TV anime. Should be a fun weekend and we're in the main hotel this time, so no commuting from one place to another. Hopefully the weather will co-operate this year.
