The Toronto Underground Cinema is closing its doors.
Hello friends and fans of the Underground.
Many of you are aware that the theatre has been shuttered sine July for renovations. Unfortunately those renovations never began, as we have encountered problems of a legal and bureaucratic nature that we, management of the Toronto Underground Cinema, could not foresee. The mounting costs of these problems have ultimately led us into a situation where we have to say goodbye. The Toronto Underground Cinema will be closing its doors on Sunday Sept 16th.
That's a shame. It's a great location and in the short time they were in operation, they screened a lot of films I enjoyed, both things I'd seen before and completely new films (Denjin Zaboga, etc). Of course in the past year or so, their programming has leaned heavily in the "Repo The Genetic Opera, Rocky Horror, nerd burlesque" direction, which is not anything I'm going to be spending any money on. I don't know if those were just convenient and reliable money-makers, or if they simply couldn't get prints of movies, or what; I do know that my indie filmmgoing has been spent at the Projection Booth or the TIFF Bell Lightbox.
And of course there's the fact that when they WERE screening movies I was interested in, I found out almost by accident (like with Denjin Zaboga).
It's a real shame such a terrific location is going to lie dormant - AGAIN. I realize that Toronto is probably over-served in the movie-theater department, but it's still a waste. Somebody with a big wad of cash should do something about it. Come on you Toronto millionaires!!!
