We totally ditched the antique thing in Ancaster, partly because the weather was really foggy and misty on Sunday AM and partly because it closed at 3, which means they will be packing up the tables at 2, which is pretty much right when we'd been arriving. I did have a conversation with a dealer at a show a month or so ago, a guy who used to run a store in Toronto but now lives in the Niagara region; he explained that to set up at a show like the St. Lawrence Market show in downtown Toronto he has to be there at 6:00am, and that's after an hour drive from his place. So by the afternoon you're ready to get up and out. I can't blame him myself. We don't really need any more kitshy antiquey junk anyway. What we need is our own table at one of these things to unload our own junk.

Anyway we went to the record show instead, and we dug out some fairly interesting LPs, some for listening and some for making fun of on the Mister Kitty. Listened to some interesting conversations; seemed like every table had its own lurker who had nothing better to do but stand in front of some poor guy's table, blocking the merchandise, blathering on about Genesis box sets or the Kennedy assassination. If they ARE actually shopping then they spread their elbows wide so you can't get anywhere near THEIR particular treasure trove.

If I was still doing tables at cons on any kind of a frequent basis, I would put a taxi meter on the table and people who just wanted to stand in front of the table and talk at me would be charged fifty cents a minute. It's great you're chatty, it's great you're friendly, but if you take up more than two minutes of table frontage then you should BUY something, if only to be polite.

MAD MEN continues to entertain this season; I am subconsciously waiting for that shark-jumping moment but so far it hasn't happened. Pete Campbell's suburban house is consistently appalling; every wall has a different wallpaper or different color of paint, and they're all ugly. Past Sunday was England winning the world cup. Enjoy it fellas. Gonna have to last you a while.

I have been editing video together for various Anime North panels and so far I have 2 of the 4 complete. At this rate I should be done before Victoria Day, which gives me a long weekend to relax and get ready for the show itself. I'm doing a big Tezuka anime thing with Helen McCarthy and while I do have a massive chunk of Tezuka TV, movies, and shorts, there are one or two titles that got neglected, and I have one US dollar for the first guy in the audience who raises his hand and says "what about so-and-so?"

Watched two episodes of the new LUPIN III series over at the Funi site where they have it streaming. It's really entertaining and totally for adults. The nudity is casual and frequent, but that's not what makes it for grownups; the show has that sketchy Monkey Punch character design and stars mature adults doing mature adult things: gambling, getting high, killing each other, seducing each other, stealing whatever isn't nailed down. If you want the friendly Lupin of "Cagliostro Castle" then go somewhere else. Fujiko is the star of this one and moves into the spotlight as every bit of a wish-fulfillment figure as Lupin, a woman whose beauty can seduce nations yet who can out-shoot, out-fight or out-think almost any man. Haven't seen her cook.

Apparently last weekend was Ad Astra, the local literary SF convention. I realize that I am totally out of touch with that scene, but it kinda says something when you don't find out about it until it's over. Of course if they were at the same hotel they're always at, the one on the Don Valley Parkway, they picked the weekend that the Don Valley Parkway was closed for maintenance, so it's not like we could get there anyway.
