back from the Anime North
May. 31st, 2010 11:57 amApparently there was a big power blackout at the Doubletree late Sunday night that the con totally missed, thankfully. As near as I can tell the convention was a success. The workshop part of it had a lot of problems that were caused by a lot of issues; my sinuses worked overtime to make me cough and wheeze all weekend; and the crowds were heavier and the crowd control was worse. But I didn't hear any complaints, didn't see any sad faces, everybody was happy and shining, if a little sunburnt.
The weather was amazing. Anime North has some sort of pact with the weather gods to ensure good weather and this weekend was sunny in the low 80s, perfect for hanging outside in yards and yards of Fabricland fabric.

Anime Hell was Friday night in the Plaza Ballroom, the main events room. I was curious as to what kind of crowd was going to handle the venue and date changes, but I shouldn't have worried; the entire room was filled to capacity throughout the performance.
This is a fake panorama photo of the room about a half hour before showtime.

Four screens, excellent sound, not a bad seat in the house. Closer to showtime it looked like this.

Most of the pix I got during the show were blurry and vague, and this one is no exception, but you can see what the screens looked like from the back of the house.

After Hell we showed the Ozone Commandos movie and Bad American Dubbing 1,2,3. Naturally when Hell ended a lot of people left the room, but after an intermission to let me take a short break, people started filtering back in and by the time the OzC movie got going we had a decent crowd again. I had to do a lot of explaining during Bad American Dubbing to set the tone for the piece; it's an artifact of a very specific time and mindset and while I don't think I'd screen it again, the audience seemed to enjoy it and laughed at all the right parts, especially the Prince Of Space "your weapons have no effect" and the endless Captain Harlock narration.
Saturday I went out and bought new comfortable shoes, because the walk between the Sheraton and the Doubletree was more than my old Converse could handle. Saturday night Neil did Totally Lame Anime, which completely filled Internation C to more than bursting.

Neil had old favorites and new clips and lots of squealing from fangirls whenever Garzey's Wing showed a glimpse of a naked male thigh. Afterwards we went out and got milkshakes at Zet's. Sunday we checked out of the Sheraton, did one last dealer's room turn, and I did a 2pm panel about Classic Anime which involved me coughing a lot. We got out of the con around 4 and went home, fed the cat, had dinner at the Brazen Head, walked around the CNE grounds, drove Neil through touristy Toronto stuff, and then dropped him off back at the Doubletree just in time for all their lights to go out.
We bought a lot of stuff at the Nominoichi - mostly cheap DVDs and $1 VHS - and a few things in the dealer's room, but nothing really amazing, except for the set of Albator buttons Shain found. They have the character's inaccurate French names and a little CBC logo on 'em.
I had fun, but in between my summer cold, various frustrations here and there, the inescapable crowds, and the endless walk between the Sheraton and the Doubletree, I was glad to get home on Sunday. Now it's time for a little rest.
