african lion safari
Sep. 4th, 2013 12:49 amAbout an hour from here is African Lion Safari, one of those drive-thru wildlife parks that used to be all the rage, and still are, I guess. This one is kinda neat.

Yes, there are lions, just sort of hanging around not doing a whole lot. Plenty of other animals too.
I took a bunch of pictures and they are behind the cut!

This guy, or gal, climbed on top of the car in front of us and seemed determined to hang out there all day long.

The bats were kinda creepy.

There IS such a thing as a burrow owl and it DOES live in a hole in the ground.

This little guy pulled his blanket over his head. It was sad.

This guy was talking back to us and totally showing off.

Yup, you could ride the elephants, for a slight fee.

There was a train ride, the highlight of which was a snapping turtle gaping his jaws at us, and a pontoon boat ride past islands where lemurs and monkeys lived.

All in all, kinda neat, lots more outside-the-car stuff than I was expecting, and more, I dunno, animal-friendly and responsible than one would have been led to believe. Still, one day those elephants are going to have enough of this nonsense, and go on a rampage, and who would blame 'em?
Speaking of rampages, the rhino pix are on the other camera. Now THOSE are animals I'm afraid of.

Date: 2013-09-04 09:28 pm (UTC)And baboons are MEAN ASS MOFOS. We had the Alpha of a group attack our car, sitting on the trunk, screaming and just letting us know we were not welcome. And THEN he left a giant dump on the trunk. My uncle discovered some new curse words that day.
There were other primates, can't recall what but they were small critters, who tried to steal my grandmother's purse. She developed new curse words too.
You want something to be afraid of? Hippos. Hippos are NASTY and they'll tip your boat and BITE YOU in a heartbeat. Forget about playing their teeth like a xylophone. Not gonna happen.
