Here's a photo of a dealer's room table at A-Kon circa 1992. All toys and model kits!

Photobucket

This is blown up from a negative; I was in photo class at the time in college and had a 35mm completely manual non-digital old-fashioned roll-film, develop it yourself camera. I don't miss those things, not really.

I remember that table! Point and buy! Point and buy! Point and buy! And I think I actually built everything they sold me.

Depends on the con, I think. AWA 2011, there was a lot of...gah, I can't even really recall, stuff. dress-up items, some manga, a few carrying DVDs (and the Discotek booth, man, I dropped some money there and would do it again given their recent announcements!), I think maybe 6 different Steampunk vendors, a couple of 'old vidgame carts' people, oh, and figures. many many PVC statues and their posing cousins like Figma and Revoltech. Not a single Golgo 13 or Jigen Daisuke however. The MOE was omnipresent.

I kinda wanted to pick up the PVC statue of 'Misty May' from Otaku no Video but it was so pervy I would have felt boundless shame displaying it.

There were a couple of guys selling DVDs and Manga at 'cutout' prices and I managed to pick up a few things at $5 that I felt were worth that much.

and I did get my 11th Doctor Sonic Screwdriver there so I consider that a score. :)

Anime con dealers rooms these days are made up of maybe 25% DVDs, 25% manga, 10% variable con-culture junk (t-shirts, prop weapons, gaming supplies, etc) and 40% figures, character goods, cell phone tchotchkes, UFO catcher toys, and the like.

Maybe one dealer with cels, one dealer with old toys and model kits.

Certainly the kind of stuff seen in that photo - giant toy sets, etc - is rare at the cons I go to.

Added: It's my observation that the 40% with figures et al, they all source their product from the exact same vendor. Same shit over and over and over, only variation is if one of them feels some figures they can 'milk' for higher profit due to some skevy factor or sense of being popular.
