Still busy. Worked Friday, worked Saturday, slept late on Sunday and then spent the rest of the day editing video and drawing Zero Fighter. Now it's Monday and the whole thing starts all over again. BTW there's a new Stupid Comics up, has been since Friday.

I put together a slightly trimmed-down version of "Bad American Dubbing" to show at Anime North this year. I have no idea how funny it will be to modern audiences, and I expect there will need to be some explanation as to how this was all put together using something called "video tape". The edits were mostly for clips that suffered from two ills - lousy video qualilty, and lousy video quality with my annoying voice making some kind of sarcastic remark on top of it. A lot of what passed for 'humor' in "Bad American Dubbing" was dependent upon the audience being intimately familiar with the names of people who produced "Battle Of The Planets" or having seen the original Crusher Joe film or being outraged at edits made in "Star Blazers" - it seems like we were making these little movies for an audience of ourselves and maybe ten or fifteen other people. I think with the third one we learned to let the source material speak for itself and let the gags flow naturally, and it's a lot more watchable. So if you're in the Plaza Ballroom after midnight on Friday at Anime North, be sure and stick around for part III. The things are only 25 minutes each.

I was tempted to ditch Part One entirely, but there's some good stuff on there - the Prince Of Space "your weapons have no effect on me" mashup, "That was no person, I think it's a woman" line, etc. Many of the clips - and this goes for all three - could have used a few seconds of explanation, maybe a text intro, "Okay, New World Pictures dubbed the Galaxy Express film and they renamed Captain Harlock as "Captain Warlock" and they gave him John Wayne's voice, okay"

I suspect it'll do a good job at winnowing out the die-hards and by the time we wrap up the audience will be considerably smaller than when it started, but that's OK, it will be somewhere around 1:30am at that point. I really don't know what the switch to Friday is going to do to the Anime Hell audience. Will they be able to make the readjustment? I'll have to put out a lot of flyers.

I still have to edit together Anime Hell and edit together a bunch of clips for the Classic Anime panel on Sunday. I should have better looking "Prince Planet" clips at any rate. The classic stuff won't take too long - I've done that sort of thing lots of times - but Anime Hell is always a 2-day job and I usually wind up throwing one disc away during the process because it just doesn't 'feel right'. By the way, you can't download it anywhere and I am not selling it on DVD, thanks for asking.

I've been editing video for a couple weekends now. I hooked up the WD TV player to convert those pesky MKV subtitles to DVD, too. So much to do...

Yeah, we showed BAD to the local anime club a year or two ago, and the reaction was mostly...confused. It didn't seem like it was the in-jokes that threw them, though. The current generation of anime fans hasn't had to experience bad dubbing, or indeed dubbing at all if they didn't consciously choose to. So the whole thing just doesn't really resonate with them.

Good luck with Hell. Are there gonna be, what, three-four of those going on that same Friday night in different places?

So the best they could do for that issue of Lil' Jinx is crib from Little Nemo?

Huh.

and yeah, I'm thinking the AmeriOtaku (yes, even in Canada)Generation just cannot understand B.A.D. They are so far removed from the very concept of repurposed cartoons that it's alien.

I think you're on the right track, focusing on really absurd dialog such as the "that wasn't a person! It was a woman!" bit. That should stand up. And I can't help but think Matt's shriek of agony (with everyone else) over the ENDLESS narration for 'Captain Harlock and the Queen blah blah' will get a good reaction.

It will be a wonderful night of Hell throughout the land. Our devilish master will be pleased!! God forbid we have an anime convention that ISN'T in May. I might like to go to some of these other shows myself sometime just to see the gang and enjoy myself, but no chance of that as long as May is the only month anybody can ever schedule an anime con in.

I can't see a college anime club in 2010 enjoying "B.A.D much at all. The dubbing isn't even an issue with them any more, just switch over to your alternate Japanese track with subtitles, why don'tcha?

Today's crowd's too smart for that nonsense (I think I'm right?).

At least you're keeping the flame alive. Today's audience think thought they've heard bad dubbing anyway out of the new stuff, how wrong they are!

It's the AmeriOtaku I'll never understand. Repurposed cartoons was our blood!

I was getting an "Out of the Inkwell" vibe out of that Lil' Jinx story but Nemo is very close with the dream bit.

Shit, now that all the kids just steal their cartoons off the internet, it's "Dub? What's a dub?"

Down here we likewise wonder why there have to be five cons running on Memorial Day weekend alone. Seems like spacing things out would make it easier to draw dealers, just for starters.

Speaking for myself, I'm glad I lived long enough to see bad anime dubbing drop into the dustbin of history. WE WIN!!!

Yeah, it's comforting to know that a pet peeve can vanish so effectively.

This is kind of the problem for me, in my fantasy headspace of being able to go. There's AN, there's A-Kon, there's Mediawest con (well, no. I'd have to work some major mojo to get back in there), there's the Scottish Festival in Alma, Mi that I long to return to...cripes! Memorial day! stop being so full!
