Yes! Back from Anime North. The con gets bigger and is mutating into a strange beast, psuedopods extending into every corner and empty space of every possible area. I got to see Dan Kanemitsu again along with his manga artist pal Takeshi Nogami. Spoke to Steve Bennett at length on Sunday; hadn't seen him in a long time. He seems to be doing well. Both Dan and Steve had stories of missed panels and typical con ball-dropping things; Bennett was remarking how things ran smoother for him when I was handling workshops, which says something, as *I* thought those shows where I was handling workshops had a pretty good percentage of screwups on my part.

The crowds seemed to have fun, there were lines everywhere for panels and musical acts and the Japanese restaurant's rice balls. The Japanese Consulate General gave Anime North an award for 20 years of service, which was nice. Last minute guest additions put musical acts both right before and right after Anime Hell, but all that happened was Hell started 20 minutes late and ended right on time. I cut some material but it wasn't the strongest material and I'd rather leave 'em laughing than bored.

Traffic flow in the TCC continues to be a nightmare, with choke points, counter-intuitive crowd direction, and four times as many badge check points as are necessary- Once people are past registration, badge checking is superfluous. Happens anyway.

Charles Dunbar's panel was really well attended and popular, he's a really high-energy speaker that kind of raises the bar for the rest of us, particularly for those Sunday panels when we're wiped out. Samantha Inuoe-Harte seemed to be popular. My events all went very smoothly with zero technical problems, which is some kind of a record. Neil re-encoded the Bad American Dubbing clips I'd previously encoded badly so that was a lifesaver, and I think we're going to team up for a big B.A.D. panel next year at AN.

Every year seems to have its share of highs and lows- I think the outstanding part of the weekend, for me at least, was the impromptu party we got dragged into Saturday night while hanging out in the International Ballroom lobby. Low point was, well, Shain's uncle Bill passed away. She learned of it on Friday before we left, we went back home on Saturday to get dress clothes, and she went to the service Sunday morning.

Jason came up for the show- his first trip to Canada - and I think he had a pretty good time. Even with just a regular attendee pass he was able to social-engineer his way into the staff-level areas of events he wanted to see, and he did some valuable contacts with reps from conventions all over Canada that normally he wouldn't be seeing. We did a little touristy stuff on Thursday in the rain and on Monday in the bright sunshine - finally went to Casa Loma, which is pretty neat. I didn't take any photos, I bought 3 old comics and 2 volumes of English-language Sazae-San in the dealers room, and now it's Wednesday and I'm getting back into the non-convention groove of things.
