back from con
May. 25th, 2015 11:40 amAnd yes, we're back from the con. Went pretty well this year. There was some trepidation about the long hike up to the North building and how that was going to be accepted by the attendees (accepted nicely, thanks), it got a little chilly Friday night, we tooled around with Mike and Neil on Thursday and met Steph and EK and Brett in the Junction so that was a nice Thursday thing with some nice beer.
This year we weren't on the main list for staff badges AGAIN. This was due to a completely different error than the error that was made last year that resulted in us not being on the staff badge list. However, we did finally get our staff badges. The procedure for us getting our hotel room kind of got switched around, but we did get our hotel room with what I guess is the average amount of fuss.
There was some technical fooferaw before Hell that was the result of the BD player not being plugged in correctly, and which was only resolved after I made a panicky last minute drive over to the tech office in the International Plaza to retrieve another DVD player that as it turned out we didn't need. Anime Hell started a little late and I wound up axing three or four little segments halfway through because we were running a bit long. Finished up just after midnight and handed out Timbits. When we bought those 100 Timbits earlier in the day, the Tim Horton's staff looked at us like we was crazy. We can't be the first people to ever buy 100 Timbits.
The bathrooms in the TCC North are the best bathrooms I've ever seen in a convention center. The crowd seemed to enjoy the show and stuck around most of the night, and the room, which seats 2300, wasn't standing-room-only full, but I'd say 85-95% filled, which is right around where you want to see it.
Saturday we did our noon Travel In Japan panel, in which Irwin from Anime North sat in on to distract Shain with pix of their Japan trip and which last-minute assist from Tim informed us about JR passes and eating your way across Japan. The crowd seemed to enjoy it, and as always I wish I'd taken more pix of our trip. At 3 we did our live Stupid Comics feature in which we played clips from the Cronenberg film "A Dangerous Method" that come directly from a stupid DC "Ghosts" comic, seriously, it does. I think we had our largest crowd yet, we gave away a bunch of comics. We made a dealers room run and bought nothing, got dinner with Mike, settled into the International Plaza to record interviews for the upcoming Mr Kitty podcast and eat onigiri and gossip with passers-by.
Sunday we got up, checked out, did the Dubs Time Forgot panel with Mike that was packed and fun and too short, and then at 3 did the Class Of '85 panel with Neil that wasn't as packed but was fun and we did two solid hours of old school tale telling. And at 5 we packed up in the car and met Steph down on Lakeshore in Mississauga for Vietnamese food and later some patio sittin' and beer drinkin' which is the perfect thing to do on a warm Sunday afternoon.
And that was AN 2015. Took no photos, bought no anime things, did 5 panels/events, drove some folks around a bit, didn't get sick or hung over, enjoyed the nice weather. I don't think you can ask for more than that.
