upcoming events
Aug. 22nd, 2014 11:28 amLet's see, what's happening in the next few weeks:
Sept. 5-7 is this thing called the Fan Events Forum, whereby people who run fan events get together and talk about the challenges facing them in their field. Also trade war stories and scars and various mental traumas. I'm on a couple of panels. Looking forward to it, they're trying to make it a little less, I dunno, SMOFy than the SMOFcons, which are geared towards the literary SF fan convention community, slightly more cliquish and in-crowdy than the crowd that manages the anime cons. Though there is some crossover.
Sept. 13 is the yearly SF/Anime Flea Market at the main branch of the Toronto Public Library, in the Beeton Auditorium.

We'll be there with a bunch of toys, comics, books, and LPs. Every year I think I'm going to run out of junk to sell, and every year I come up with more junk to sell. It's free, everybody in Toronto should drop by and at least check the stuff out.
September 26-28 is, of course, AWA. Well, let's say Sept. 25-28, as events are starting to squeeze in on Thursday, like the SuperHappyFunSell flea market, the Old School Classroom, and now there's karaoke on Thursday nights. I'm told registration will be opening earlier, too. They are starting to refer to the show as a 4 day convention, so get used to it. Everything about the show is bigger and better this year; the con finally has the last Galleria exhibit hall for main events, there's going to be a grownups 21+ social time event on Saturday night, there are 300+ hours of other events, and guests like Shonen Knife, Junichi "Space Dandy" Suwabe, Toru "Amuro" Furuya, Yuko "Sailor Saturn" Minaguchi, and tons of others. There's even an Anisong event with performers from Japan. It should be a pretty amazing show this year. I'm managing the SHFS, doing Old School Classroom, Anime Hell, and a Candy Candy panel with Neil. I've also been shanghaied into a panel about Yas, will likely be on various 20th anniversary AWA things, and will need to oversee the 21+ event in some capacity... so a busy show for me. As always.
After AWA... I plan to finish ZERO FIGHTER if it isn't already finished, and take a little break from regular comic-strip work to both fix the many problems with ZERO FIGHTER and work on the new strip.
In the meantime, the latest Stupid Comics is all about a policeman killed in the line of duty who comes back as a ghost to hover around a gangster and remind us how eventually the law will catch up with him. Kind of a waste of his ghost time if you ask me
