back from the show
May. 27th, 2014 11:55 amThe weather DID cooperate. You really don't appreciate nice weather until you've been through five or six months of cold and wet and freezing and gray. For me the show was a LOT less stressful than last year - we were in the International (formerly the Doubletree) so there wasn't a lot of walking back and forth or driving back and forth or herding people around or trying to reach consensus on meals. We set up the AWA table, got into the Nomonichi garage sale fairly early, spent a little money. Anime Hell was packed and in spite of a schedule change that put the koto drummers on just prior, went off more or less on time and to a crowd that stayed put throughout. Our panels on Saturday and Sunday went well with very few tech hiccups - the files I put onto a flash drive were fine, but I left the flash drive at home. However, I'd backed them up onto the laptop. Always have a backup kids! We commandeered a table in the Int'l lobby Saturday night and socialized for a while with whoever we knew who happened to be walking past. That's my plan in future, I think. Our Stupid Comics panel pulled the largest crowd we've ever had, we gave away a bunch of bad comics, and before we knew it the show was over and once again I'd totally forgotten to pick the stuff up off the AWA table. That's $10 worth of foam core gone, I guess.
I've only seen photos of one Christian demonstrator marching up and down Dixon with his Jesus sign, but I'm told there were two. I don't want to sound like a evangelist for print media, but having a few young people hand out tracts would work a LOT better than parading around with a giant wall-o-text sign that is lost among the giant wing cosplays and the dragon cosplays and the other elaborate eye-catching outfits enjoying the sunshine.
We didn't spend too much cash, we didn't stay up too late, we ate regular meals. It's like we're grownups or something. The International has AMC so we camped out in Neil's room and watched the MAD MEN finale on Sunday night, and then we went on home. Now we can not think about conventions for a few months.
