So there's this Japanese girls' comic called ROSE OF VERSAILLES about the French Revolution and Marie Antionette and that whole unpleasantness. It was really popular and inspired an anime TV series. It also was very popular in Europe, and in 1979 a French director made a live-action film out of it, starring Europeans. The copy I have sure looks like it was shot in English, which adds to the international flavor, I am so sure. Fred Schodt worked on translating the manga for the project, as I recall. Anyway, the movie is showing at the TIFF Bell Lightbox tomorrow night.

If there's a movie I never thought would be shown on the big screen anywhere near me, it's this one. I mean this goes way beyond "what the heck" territory and into "somebody in a position of real power thinks just like me" territory. Which is frightening.
