This weeks' Mister Kitty Found Sound is FRED LANE; I know we've played some Fred Lane before but I have been looking for this LP for years, finally found it, and darn it, the thing is going up on Mr Kitty.

Yup, it's just as disturbing sounding as it is disturbing looking. "Fred Lane" is a crazy fake-50s style crooner who belts out atonal, dada-esquely violent songs. His "hit", From The One That Cut You, is based on a scrawled note found in the trunk of a vintage used car. In real life he's a kindly folk artist whose brother runs a bookstore in Birmingham AL.

I love this album, I love the insane David Lynch/Tom Waits style Ruins Of Western Civilization vibe, I love that a bunch of musicians actually got their act together to actually record this album. Not quite a novelty LP, not quite experimental, not quite noise, it's too funny to be arty, too weird to be on Dr. Demento. This thing kicked around a few of the college radio stations I spent my spare time hanging out at in the early 90s and I had the chance to buy it cheap, or borrow it and never give it back, on more than one occasion. I never did, and in the end had to pay crazy Toronto money for it. Well worth it, in my opinion.

I do miss that late 80s early 90s vibe when you could put on a suit and a pair of sunglasses and start hollering about pretty much anything, and people more or less took you at face value. Especially in the South, you could get away with so much in the name of "art" or "performance". I suppose you still can in some places. Of course part of that is being 20 and so self-obsessed that you neither know nor care of these things called 'other humans'.
