Monday was Canadian Thanksgiving; it's still odd to celebrate it before Halloween, but then again I think it's a bigger deal down in the States. Anyway Shain cooked a turkey and yams and potatoes and stuffing and pumpkin pie and we did some eatin'.

Rented some movies from Eyesore to fill out the long weekend. Watched TIME BANDITS again for the first time in at least 20 years. Seems much more of a kids' movie now than it did when I was an actual kid, for some reason. We watched FEAR NO EVIL, a strange 1980 upstate NY horror picture starring nobody that can't figure out if it wants to be CARRIE or THE OMEN and winds up being a weird approximation of the two along with bits and pieces of lots of other things. Not always successful, downright confusing in parts, stars characters whose every line of dialog is a cliche or a platitude (literally uses the phrase "your children, and your children's children"), and while there's lots of setup, fails to deliver any of the shock, blood, or horror inherent in its premise, which is that Lucifer keeps getting reincarnated as scary, effeminate young men and three archangels keep getting reincarnated as various people whose job it is to kill Lucifer over and over. Lucifer this time is a high school senior with psychic powers who is tormented by 'the cool kids' in various scenes, including a naked shower room scene that is probably the gayest scene ever shot for a movie that isn't ostensibly gay. I am talking full frontal male, naked guys kissing, and if that doesn't ping your gaydar you need to get your gaydar checked out.

Other hints this film was shot in 1980 include the amazing new-wave soundtrack, featuring the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, the Rezillos, Talking Heads, the B-52s, Richard Hell, and Patti Smith. Doesn't really fit the tone of the movie at all, but is a welcome distraction at times.

The film climaxes with Lucifer/student and his army of hired-hand zombies killing high school kids in a swell ruined-castle location before being dispatched by glowing force beams of Jesus, before everything explodes and the credits roll. Definitely a curiosity, FEAR NO EVIL may be the only horror film that features a death-by-dodgeball sequence.

EDITED TO ADD: The great castle location is Boldt Castle: http://www.boldtcastle.com/visitorinfo/

We also watched LA CONFIDENTIAL and that movie still holds up.

I've been working through my cold all weekend, lots of sniffling and sneezing and coughing and various OTC medications. Hopefully this thing will clear up before long. I ditched the AN staff meeting on Saturday because of the cold, I really shouldn't be around people when I'm contaigous. Hint hint, rest of the world, guy coughing next to me in the airport last week.
