addicted to disaster
Mar. 12th, 2011 01:02 pmIt was tough to quit watching disaster footage on the TV, but I had to go into work last night, so I went to work and then came back home and watched more disaster footage of what's being called either the "Great Sendai Earthquake" or the "Great Tohoku Earthquake". Terrible, terrible news out of Japan that I can't stop watching. But I have to stop watching, because the news isn't getting any better today, I don't think. (though apparently there was an explosion at the Fukushima Nuclear plant, but no meltdown and they're describing the situation as "crisis averted"). Everybody I know in Japan is OK (I saw Matt Alt on the TV news last night) but there are a lot of people who aren't and the number keeps on rising. Apparently Ishinomaki, home of the Ishinomori Manga Museum, took a 10-meter tsunami hit.
Boston Globe's Big Picture highlights some incredible photographs. And I urge everyone to donate some money. I have been seeing some talk about what kind of things conventions should do in terms of moments of silence, charity events, etc. Those things are well and good, but what everybody should do is send money. In Canada In Canada, text REDCROSS to 30333 to donate, or call 1-800-418-1111. In the States you can text REDCROSS to 90999 or call 1-800 RED CROSS or visit www.redcross.org.
Not doing a Stupid Comics this week, for some reason just not feelin' it. Hey, remember to put your clocks forward an hour tonight!!
