Last night was the Nuit Blanche here and my contribution was to borrow a video projector and show collage video to the world outside our 5th floor balcony. The winds made it unwise to go with my original plan to affix the screen to the balcony railing, so it was inside, against the glass of our outside wall. It worked pretty well and was visible from the parking lot- it was hard to tell if it was just somebody's large-screen TV or not, but I did see some people stop and stare for a few minutes, so it's all good.

There wasn't nearly as much art in Liberty Village as there was last year. The construction in the Metro parking lot eliminated one venue, and the cul-de-sacs and corners that were host to exhibits last year were silent. Lamport Stadium parking lot and the stadium itself were used, and there was a thing in the little park near Strachan, but the rest of the neighborhood was sadly art-free. Had there been more installations in Liberty Village, certainly more people would have stuck around to witness my video art.

What there was in Liberty Village - at least what I saw of it - was heavy on the technical aspects. One exhibit featured a ring of propane-fueled torches activated by footsteps on a central platform, so volunteers would dance around and fire would erupt depending on where they stepped. Another exhibit set up three cameras at different heights, a composite image was projected onto the side of a building, and so you'd have one person's head, another person's torso, and a third person's feet. Yeah, I know. This kind of children's museum stuff is what passes for "art" in Liberty Village in 2010. There wasn't any of the interesting, tactile, engaging work we got last year. Of course I missed the entire rest of Nuit Blanche over the rest of the city, mostly because I was nursing this projector. It was nice to walk around with Donald and David and have some late night coffee and see crowds of people wandering around at 1am, but the art is going to have to get back on its "A" game next year.

Anyway now I have a bedsheet-and-2x2 screen for whatever purposes I might need it for in the coming year. Next year I'll wire it to the balcony and perhaps it won't be quite as windy, and I'll make a longer video so we can get out and see more art.
